They could sell me a replacement unit with new discs at a cost of roughly $4,400.00 plus tax. They could not offer any information about how or where the unit could be replaced. They specifically told me there was no recall or service bulletin for my cars sat nav. They denied any knowledge of any DVD sat nav issues. I drove to the local dealership to speak with the service department. There was a Honda service bulletin addressing the defect. I Googled the problem and found many other Honda and Acura owners with the same issue. As I had the US and Canada DVD's I swapped them out and the same thing happened so I know it isn't the disc. I contacted the local dealership and they said it could be the disc or it could be the reader. A few week before this I smelled an electrical burning smell in the car but I didn't know where it was coming from. I was coming home and about 300 yards from my driveway. Sat Nav binged and displayed message DVD disc error contact your dealer. Between this and the handful of other things that keep popping up.I'm not loving it so much any more. Everything else works fine- stereo, dvd player (for movies), cd player, backup camera, etc., so it's frustrating that there's not a way to just unhook that feature as the black screen doesn't bother me at all. To make matters worse, they told me that eventually the system will create a parasitic drain on the battery and that eventually I will have to have the system replaced.

Since I use my phone/Waze for navigation, I asked if it could just be unhooked completely and I was told no. They have to remove it and send the entire unit in for repair/replacement. The dealer told me it would be approximately $3,000 to replace the entire unit.

I've read online that this is a common problem, and the fix is crazy expensive. Trust me, the door is not open, it's just a system failure. I would have NEVER thought to ask.The Navigation unit on my MDX states "Disc Door Open" or something to that effect. Why? Because if it happens again THEY get to pay the $700 for a STUPID DVD DRIVE!! Seriously? A DVD DRIVE? Who needs a DVD drive to, oh.I don't ntrol the car?īut it gets even better.if that $0.10 piece of plastic DVD disc gets ruined? Guess what? NO HEAT OR AC FOR US! Yeah! Unless we pay the $150 for a new disc! What's on the disc? NAVIGATION SOFTWARE! Yeah! That's needed for AC/heat!!īottom line.shame on Acura. So what does this mean? From now on, if that battery dies again.we are going to take it to the dealer and let them replace it and pay a premium to do that. I don't blame him because it's just a battery swap. He just simply swapped out the battery and this started happening. Now, this all started with the guy at AutoZone changed a battery. I have never seen a design as bad as this.

Let me just say this.I work in software and I have seen a lot of bad designs but this takes the cake. Including the WRONG one that was sent to us and we couldn't get a refund. We got a second-hand one installed and it seems to work now. But, unfortunately, you can't get a new one. After a LOT of research, we found out there is simply no way this can be fixed without purchasing a new DVD drive. I hope this helps someone out there with a similar problem.

To be crippled like this for such a stupid design is really eating away at me. We love everything else about this car (and it's paid for). Is this seriously our best option? Other than buying a new vehicle, of course. Which puts us at over $1,000 and we still don't know if that will fix it. If it doesn't, he then suggested replacing the DVD drive. Which is absolutely insane! And, the dealer admitted it probably won't fix it. So my wife calls the Acura dealer and they suggest buying a new DVD. Why in the world the internal temperature for a vehicle is dependent on a navigation DVD is beyond my comprehension.but that's what we got. The issue is that we cannot control the internal temps or anything else because almost all of it runs through the touch screen system. We've taken the disc out and put it back in, etc. Under the passenger seat is a DVD drive that contains the navigation software (GPS, maps, etc. We replaced the battery and ever since then, the on-board navigation system has this error message that says something like "Check the disc.". So a while back the battery died and wouldn't hold a charge. I can't remember the exact year at the moment but I want to say it's either a 2004 or 2008. But we have a major issue with my wife's Acura MDX. Anyway, first of all, I am not anything even remotely close to a mechanic. I tried searching for this question but could not find it.
